Cognitive Development

The Brain is going through many changes during this time in development. The Prefrontal Cortex begins to increase, which allows more connections throughout the brain. As this development is occurring, your child continues to grow their problem-solving skills, attention span, and cognitive control

Learning Disabilities

Learning Disabilities: difficulty learning & understanding spoken or written language

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD): Children consistently show one or more of the following over a period of time

  1. Inattention: difficulty focusing

  2. Hyperactive: high levels of physical activity

  3. Impulse: don't think before they act

Autistic Disorder: severe developmental autism spectrum disorder that has an onset during the first 3 years and includes problems in social relationship, abnormalities in communication, and restricted, and stereotyped patterns in behavior

Autism Spectrum Disorders: Problems with social interaction, verbal and nonverbal communication, and repetitive behaviors

Dyslexia: People who have a severe impairment in their ability to read and spell

Dysgraphia: learning disability that focuses on the difficulties of handwriting

 

 

Dyscalculia: learning disability that involves difficulty in math computation

In 2008, children 8-11 years old used media an average of 5 hours and 29 minutes a day

Children from 8 to 18 spend about  60 hours a week using  social media

Asperger Syndrome: relatively mind autism spectrum disorder where the child has good verbal language skills, mild nonverbal language problems, and a restricted range of interests
